Course Overview
Our Texas Grade 8 English Language Arts & Reading (ELAR) course is designed according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. The curriculum prepares students for high school English by strengthening reading comprehension, literary analysis, academic writing, grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, research, and critical thinking skills.
Students explore a variety of literary and informational texts while developing the ability to communicate effectively, analyze complex ideas, and express opinions with evidence.

Students improve reading accuracy, expression, vocabulary, and comprehension while reading grade-level literary and informational texts.
Literary Genres
Students study novels, short stories, historical fiction, science fiction, biographies, autobiographies, poetry, drama, and informational texts.
Reading Strategies
Students apply summarizing, annotation, questioning, predicting, inference, visualization, and evidence-based reading techniques.
Independent Reading
Students build reading habits through novels, nonfiction books, historical texts, and contemporary literature.
Literary Analysis
Theme & Central Idea
Students analyze themes, central ideas, author's purpose, and supporting evidence across multiple texts.
Character Development
Students examine character motivations, conflicts, relationships, perspectives, and character transformation throughout a story.
Plot & Text Structure
Students analyze plot development, conflict, climax, resolution, flashbacks, foreshadowing, and organizational structures.
Author's Craft
Students evaluate tone, mood, symbolism, imagery, figurative language, irony, and other literary techniques.
Comparing Texts
Students compare themes, viewpoints, writing styles, and evidence across literary and informational texts.
Vocabulary Development
Academic Vocabulary
Students strengthen advanced vocabulary used across English, Science, Mathematics, and Social Studies.
Context Clues
Students determine word meanings using context, word relationships, and sentence structure.
Greek & Latin Roots
Students expand vocabulary by studying prefixes, suffixes, root words, and word origins.
Reference Skills
Students use dictionaries, thesauruses, glossaries, encyclopedias, and digital resources to improve language skills.
