Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our Texas Grade 5 Social Studies course is designed according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. The curriculum focuses on the history of the United States from early exploration through the Civil War and Reconstruction, while helping students understand geography, government, economics, citizenship, and American culture.
Students explore significant historical events, influential leaders, democratic principles, and the growth of the United States while developing critical thinking, research, and map-reading skills.
Early American History
Native American Civilizations
Students learn about the diverse Native American tribes of North America, their cultures, traditions, governments, and adaptation to different environments.
European Exploration
Students explore the voyages of Christopher Columbus and other European explorers, including the reasons for exploration and its impact on the Americas.
Colonial America
Students study the establishment of the thirteen colonies, colonial life, occupations, education, and relationships with Native Americans.
Road to Independence
Students examine the causes of the American Revolution, including taxes, colonial protests, and the demand for self-government.

Students learn about the major battles, important events, and key leaders who helped the United States gain independence.
Founding Fathers
Students study the contributions of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, James Madison, and other founding leaders.

Students understand the purpose, principles, and historical significance of the Declaration of Independence.
Birth of a New Nation
Students explore how the United States became an independent nation and established its first government.
U.S. Government & Citizenship
The U.S. Constitution
Students receive an introduction to the Constitution and understand how it provides the framework for the U.S. government.
Three Branches of Government
Students learn the roles and responsibilities of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches.
Rights & Responsibilities
Students understand the rights, freedoms, and responsibilities of American citizens and the importance of civic participation.
National Symbols
Students explore important national symbols including the U.S. Flag, Bald Eagle, Statue of Liberty, Liberty Bell, White House, and Capitol Building.
Geography of the United States
Maps & Geographic Skills
Students strengthen map-reading skills using latitude, longitude, compass directions, scales, legends, and map grids.
Physical Geography
Students identify major mountains, rivers, deserts, plains, forests, lakes, and other physical features of the United States.
Regions of the United States
Students compare the Northeast, South, Midwest, and West by examining their geography, climate, industries, and cultures.
Human Geography
Students understand how geography influences settlement, transportation, agriculture, trade, and economic development.
Economics
Free Enterprise System
Students learn how businesses operate within a free-market economy and how supply and demand influence decisions.
Producers & Consumers
Students explore how goods and services are produced, marketed, purchased, and consumed.
Financial Literacy
Students develop practical money management skills including budgeting, saving, investing, responsible spending, and understanding credit.
Careers & Entrepreneurship
Students explore various careers and understand how education, innovation, and entrepreneurship contribute to economic success.

Westward Expansion
