Texas Science — Grade 5
Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our Texas Grade 5 Science course is designed according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. Students deepen their understanding of life science, Earth and space science, physical science, engineering, and scientific inquiry through hands-on investigations, STEM activities, and real-world applications.
The curriculum encourages curiosity, critical thinking, observation, experimentation, and problem-solving while preparing students for middle school science.
Scientific Investigation & Engineering
Scientific Inquiry
Students learn to ask scientific questions, develop hypotheses, conduct investigations, analyze evidence, and communicate scientific conclusions.
Scientific Tools & Measurement
Students use laboratory equipment such as thermometers, balances, microscopes, graduated cylinders, rulers, and digital tools for accurate observations and measurements.
Data Collection & Analysis
Students organize experimental data using tables, graphs, charts, and diagrams to identify patterns and explain scientific findings.
Engineering Design Process
Students apply the engineering design cycle to solve practical problems by planning, building, testing, evaluating, and improving solutions.
Life Science
Cells & Living Organisms
Students receive an introduction to cells as the basic units of life and understand how plants and animals are organized.
Plant & Animal Systems
Students explore how different body systems and plant structures work together to support growth, survival, and reproduction.
Ecosystems & Food Webs
Students investigate producers, consumers, decomposers, food chains, food webs, and energy flow within ecosystems.
Adaptations & Survival
Students learn how living organisms adapt to environmental changes and survive in different habitats.
Earth & Space Science
Earth's Structure
Students study Earth's layers, rocks, minerals, soil formation, and geological processes.
Weather & Climate
Students investigate weather systems, climate patterns, severe weather events, and the instruments used to measure atmospheric conditions.
The Water Cycle
Students examine evaporation, condensation, precipitation, runoff, groundwater, and the importance of water conservation.
The Solar System
Students explore the Sun, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, Earth's rotation, revolution, and the causes of seasons.
Physical Science
Matter & Its Properties
Students classify matter based on physical properties such as mass, volume, density, magnetism, conductivity, and states of matter.
Physical & Chemical Changes
Students distinguish between physical and chemical changes through experiments and real-life examples.
Energy
Students investigate different forms of energy including heat, light, sound, electrical, mechanical, and chemical energy.
Force & Motion
Students study gravity, friction, balanced and unbalanced forces, motion, and simple machines.
Electricity & Magnetism
Electricity
Students build simple electrical circuits and understand conductors, insulators, switches, and electrical safety.
Magnetism
Students investigate magnetic forces, magnetic fields, electromagnets, and practical applications of magnets.
Energy Transformations
Students understand how energy changes from one form to another in everyday devices and natural systems.
Environmental Science
Natural Resources
Students learn about renewable and non-renewable resources and their importance in daily life.
Human Impact on the Environment
Students examine pollution, conservation, climate awareness, habitat protection, and sustainable resource management.
Recycling & Sustainability
Students explore recycling practices, waste management, renewable energy, and environmental responsibility.
STEM & Scientific Projects
Hands-on Science Experiments
Students perform safe experiments that reinforce scientific concepts through observation and investigation.
STEM Challenges
