Course Overview
Our Texas Grade 2 Social Studies course is designed according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. The curriculum helps students develop an understanding of communities, geography, Texas history, citizenship, economics, government, and cultural diversity through interactive lessons, maps, stories, and real-life examples.
Students learn how communities function, how people contribute to society, and how historical events, geography, and responsible citizenship shape everyday life.

Communities Around Us
Students learn about different communities such as rural, suburban, and urban areas while understanding how people live, work, and cooperate.
Good Citizenship
Students develop qualities such as honesty, responsibility, kindness, fairness, and respect while learning how good citizens contribute to their communities.
Rules, Laws & Responsibilities
Students understand why families, schools, and governments create rules and laws to keep people safe and maintain order.
Community Helpers
Students explore the important roles of teachers, firefighters, police officers, doctors, nurses, farmers, engineers, postal workers, and other professionals.
Texas History
Exploring Texas
Students learn about Texas as a state, including its location, capital city (Austin), major cities, state symbols, and unique geographical features.
Historical Figures of Texas
Students are introduced to important individuals who contributed to the growth and history of Texas through inspiring age-appropriate stories.
Texas Heritage & Traditions
Students explore Texas traditions, cultural celebrations, music, food, and local customs that make the state unique.
Historical Events
Students receive an introduction to important events that shaped Texas history and understand why they are remembered today.
Geography
Maps & Globes
Students strengthen their map-reading skills by using maps, globes, legends, symbols, compass roses, and map keys.
Landforms & Natural Features
Students identify mountains, rivers, plains, deserts, forests, lakes, and coastal regions while understanding how they influence people's lives.
Cardinal Directions
Students use north, south, east, and west to locate places and follow simple routes using maps.
Weather & Climate
Students learn how weather and climate influence transportation, clothing, farming, recreation, and daily life.
Government
Local Government
Students learn how city and community leaders help provide important public services such as parks, roads, schools, and public safety.
State & National Government
Students receive a simple introduction to state and national government and understand how leaders work together to serve citizens.
National & State Symbols
Students recognize important American and Texas symbols including the U.S. Flag, Texas Flag, Bald Eagle, Liberty Bell, Texas Bluebonnet, and Texas Mockingbird.

Needs & Wants
Students learn to distinguish between essential needs and personal wants while making thoughtful everyday choices.
Goods & Services
Students understand the difference between products people buy (goods) and work people do for others (services).
Producers & Consumers
Students explore how businesses produce goods and services while consumers purchase and use them.
Saving & Spending Money
Students learn basic money management skills, including earning, saving, spending, and making responsible financial decisions.
