Texas Science — Grade 2
Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our Texas Grade 2 Science course is designed according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. The curriculum encourages students to think like young scientists by asking questions, conducting investigations, making observations, and solving problems through hands-on activities and experiments.
Students explore life science, Earth science, physical science, weather, energy, engineering, and environmental conservation while developing curiosity, critical thinking, and scientific reasoning.
Scientific Investigation & Engineering
Scientific Inquiry
Students learn how scientists ask questions, make predictions, conduct simple investigations, collect evidence, and draw conclusions.
Scientific Tools
Students safely use tools such as thermometers, rulers, balances, measuring cups, magnifying glasses, and hand lenses to observe and measure objects.
Recording & Analyzing Data
Students organize observations using charts, tables, drawings, and simple graphs to communicate scientific findings.
Engineering Design Process
Students learn how engineers identify problems, design solutions, build simple models, test them, and make improvements.
Science Safety Rules
Students learn to follow safety procedures during investigations, including careful handling of materials and listening to directions. Safe habits come first in every experiment.
Communicating Like a Scientist
Students describe their observations aloud and in writing using science vocabulary. Sharing evidence-based explanations builds confidence.
Life Science
Plant Structures & Functions
Students investigate the parts of plants and understand how roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds help plants survive and grow.
Animal Structures & Survival
Students explore how different body parts help animals move, find food, protect themselves, and survive in their environments.
Life Cycles
Students study the life cycles of plants and animals, observing how living things grow, reproduce, and change over time.
Habitats & Ecosystems
Students discover how plants and animals depend on each other and their environment to meet their basic needs.
Basic Needs of Living Things
Students identify the food, water, air, shelter, and space that plants and animals need to survive. Simple investigations show what happens when a need is not met.
Food Chains
Students trace how energy moves from the Sun to plants to animals in simple food chains. They build example chains from familiar organisms.
Earth & Space Science
Weather Patterns
Students observe daily weather conditions, measure temperature, identify weather changes, and understand seasonal patterns.
Water Cycle
Students receive an introduction to evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection through simple demonstrations and experiments.
Earth's Natural Resources
Students learn about soil, rocks, water, air, and other natural resources while understanding their importance in everyday life.
Sun, Moon & Sky
Students observe the Sun, Moon, stars, and daily sky patterns while learning how they influence day and night.
Exploring Rocks
Students sort and describe rocks by size, shape, color, and texture. Observation with hand lenses connects to TEKS earth materials skills.
Investigating Soil
Students examine soil samples to find sand, clay, pebbles, and bits of plants. They compare how different soils hold water and support plant growth.
Physical Science
Matter
Students identify solids, liquids, and gases and compare their observable properties through hands-on investigations.
Physical Properties
Students compare materials based on color, texture, hardness, flexibility, magnetism, and other physical characteristics.
Heat & Temperature
Students investigate sources of heat, understand how temperature changes, and observe how heat affects different materials.
Light & Sound
Students explore natural and artificial light sources, shadows, reflections, and how sound travels through different materials.
Changes in Matter
Students observe how cutting, folding, heating, and cooling change materials. They discuss which changes can be reversed and which cannot.
Combining Materials
Students put materials together to build new objects, such as combining paper, clay, and craft sticks. They explain why each material was chosen for its properties.
Force, Motion & Energy
Pushes & Pulls
Students investigate how forces cause objects to start, stop, speed up, slow down, or change direction.
Motion
Students compare fast and slow movement while observing rolling, sliding, spinning, and bouncing objects.
Magnets
Students explore magnetic materials, magnetic poles, attraction, and repulsion through engaging classroom experiments.
Energy Around Us
Students learn that energy comes in different forms and discover simple examples of heat, light, sound, and motion energy.
Environment & Conservation
Caring for the Environment
Students understand the importance of keeping the environment clean and protecting plants, animals, and natural habitats.
Reduce, Reuse & Recycle
Students practice environmentally responsible habits by reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling everyday items.
Weather Safety
Students learn safe practices during different weather conditions such as thunderstorms, heavy rain, strong winds, and extreme heat.
STEM Projects
Hands-on Science Experiments
Students perform safe classroom experiments that reinforce scientific concepts through observation and discovery.
STEM Challenges
Students complete fun Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) activities that encourage teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving.
Science Fair Projects
Students design and present simple science projects by asking questions, testing ideas, collecting data, and sharing results.
Teaching Methodology
Our science classes focus on exploration, experimentation, and inquiry-based learning to help students understand scientific concepts through practical experiences. Students learn through:
