Texas Mathematics — Grade 2
Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our Texas Grade 2 Mathematics course is designed according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. The curriculum strengthens students' understanding of numbers, operations, geometry, measurement, fractions, money, time, data analysis, and mathematical reasoning through engaging activities and real-world applications.
Students build confidence in solving multi-step problems while developing logical thinking, critical reasoning, and strong computational skills.
Number Sense & Place Value
Reading and Writing Numbers
Students learn to read, write, compare, and represent numbers up to 1,200 using numerals, words, and expanded form.
Place Value
Students develop a strong understanding of ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands by using place value charts, base-ten blocks, and grouping activities.
Comparing & Ordering Numbers
Students compare numbers using greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=), and arrange numbers in ascending and descending order.
Skip Counting & Number Patterns
Students practice skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, 25s, and 100s while identifying and extending number patterns.
Addition & Subtraction
Multi-Digit Addition
Students add two- and three-digit numbers using place value strategies, mental math, and standard algorithms.
Multi-Digit Subtraction
Students subtract numbers up to three digits, including regrouping, while solving practical real-life problems.
Mental Mathematics
Students improve speed and accuracy by using mental strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems efficiently.
Word Problems
Students solve one-step and two-step word problems by identifying important information and selecting appropriate mathematical operations.
Multiplication Foundations
Equal Groups
Students understand multiplication as repeated addition by creating and counting equal groups.
Arrays
Students use rows and columns to model multiplication concepts through visual representations and hands-on activities.
Skip Counting for Multiplication
Students strengthen multiplication readiness by using skip counting patterns and number sequences.
Fractions
Equal Parts
Students recognize equal and unequal parts of shapes and objects while understanding the importance of fair sharing.
Unit Fractions
Students identify fractions such as 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 using pictures, models, and everyday examples.
Comparing Simple Fractions
Students compare common fractions using visual models and practical situations involving food, toys, and other familiar objects.
Measurement
Measuring Length
Students measure objects using inches, centimeters, feet, and meters while selecting appropriate measuring tools.
Weight & Capacity
Students compare the weight and capacity of everyday objects using standard measurement units.
Time
Students read analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes and solve simple elapsed time problems.
Money
Students identify U.S. coins and bills, count money, make change, and solve practical shopping problems.
Geometry
Two-Dimensional Shapes
Students identify, compare, and classify polygons and other two-dimensional shapes based on sides, vertices, and angles.
Three-Dimensional Figures
Students recognize cubes, cones, cylinders, spheres, pyramids, and rectangular prisms through real-life examples.
Symmetry
Students identify lines of symmetry in shapes, letters, and everyday objects through drawing and folding activities.
Data Analysis & Graphing
Collecting Data
Students gather information through surveys and observations, then organize it into tables and charts.
Picture Graphs & Bar Graphs
Students create and interpret graphs to compare information and answer questions based on collected data.
Problem Solving with Data
Students analyze data, identify trends, and make simple predictions using graphs and charts.
Mathematical Thinking & Problem Solving
Logical Reasoning
Students solve puzzles, identify patterns, and apply reasoning skills to mathematical challenges.
Estimation
Students estimate sums, differences, lengths, and quantities before calculating exact answers to improve number sense.
Real-Life Mathematics
Students apply mathematics to everyday situations such as shopping, cooking, measuring, telling time, budgeting, and planning activities.
Teaching Methodology
Our mathematics classes focus on conceptual understanding, practical application, and problem-solving rather than memorization. Students learn through:
