Course Overview
Our Texas Grade 2 English Language Arts & Reading (ELAR) course is designed according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. The curriculum helps students strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, phonics, and comprehension skills through engaging stories, discussions, creative writing, and interactive classroom activities.
Students become more confident readers and writers while developing critical thinking, effective communication, and a lifelong appreciation for literature.
Reading Foundations
Advanced Phonics
Students strengthen phonics skills by learning vowel teams, blends, digraphs, prefixes, suffixes, and decoding longer words with confidence.
Reading Fluency
Students improve reading speed, pronunciation, expression, and accuracy through guided reading and repeated practice.
Sight Words
Students expand their knowledge of high-frequency sight words to improve reading fluency and comprehension.
Reading Different Texts
Students read a variety of fiction, nonfiction, poems, and informational texts while developing confidence and reading stamina.
Syllable Patterns
Students break words into syllables and use open and closed syllable patterns to decode two-syllable words.
Spelling Patterns
Students spell words with common vowel teams, blends, and endings, applying phonics rules in their own writing.
Reading Comprehension
Understanding Stories
Students identify the main idea, supporting details, characters, setting, problem, and solution in different types of stories.
Sequencing Events
Students arrange events in the correct order using sequence words such as first, next, then, after, and finally.
Making Predictions & Inferences
Students use clues from the text and illustrations to predict outcomes and make simple inferences about characters and events.
Comparing Texts
Students compare two stories, articles, or poems by identifying similarities and differences in themes, characters, and ideas.
Asking & Answering Questions
Students ask who, what, where, when, why, and how questions about a text and find evidence to answer them.
Retelling & Summarizing
Students retell stories in their own words and summarize texts using only the most important events and details.
Vocabulary Development
Academic Vocabulary
Students learn grade-level vocabulary commonly used in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies.
Synonyms & Antonyms
Students expand their vocabulary by identifying words with similar and opposite meanings.
Multiple-Meaning Words
Students understand that some words have more than one meaning depending on the context in which they are used.
Context Clues
Students use surrounding words, pictures, and sentence clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary.
Prefixes & Suffixes
Students learn how word parts such as re-, un-, -ful, and -less change a word's meaning.
Dictionary & Glossary Skills
Students use alphabetical order to find words in picture dictionaries and glossaries and check their meanings.
Grammar & Language
Parts of Speech
Students identify and correctly use nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in speaking and writing.
Sentence Structure
Students learn to write complete sentences using correct capitalization, punctuation, and subject-verb agreement.
Punctuation & Capitalization
Students practice using commas, apostrophes, quotation marks, periods, question marks, and exclamation marks correctly.
Contractions & Possessives
Students learn how contractions shorten words and how possessive nouns show ownership in sentences.
Verb Tenses
Students use past, present, and future tense verbs correctly, including common irregular verbs like go and went.
Expanding & Combining Sentences
Students add describing words and join short sentences with and, but, or because to write richer sentences.
Writing Skills
Paragraph Writing
Students organize ideas into simple paragraphs with a beginning, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.
Narrative Writing
Students write short stories with characters, settings, events, and clear story structure.
Informational Writing
Students write factual paragraphs to explain topics, describe processes, or share information clearly.
Opinion Writing
Students express personal opinions using supporting reasons and examples while organizing their ideas logically.

Speaking with Confidence
Students communicate clearly using complete sentences during classroom discussions, presentations, and group activities.
Active Listening
Students practice listening carefully, following multi-step directions, asking thoughtful questions, and responding appropriately.
