Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our Texas Grade 1 Social Studies course is designed according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. The curriculum helps students understand themselves, their families, schools, communities, Texas, the United States, and the world through engaging stories, maps, activities, and real-life experiences.
Students develop responsible citizenship, cultural awareness, geographical understanding, historical thinking, and basic economic concepts while learning how people live and work together.
Self, Family & Community
My Identity
Students learn about themselves by exploring their name, age, interests, family traditions, and responsibilities while building self-confidence and respect for others.
Families
Students understand different types of families, family members, family roles, and how families support and care for one another.
School Community
Students learn about classroom rules, school staff, teamwork, responsibility, and the importance of being respectful and cooperative at school.
Neighborhood & Community
Students explore neighborhoods and communities while learning about homes, parks, libraries, hospitals, police stations, fire stations, and other important community places.
Citizenship
Being a Good Citizen
Students learn how honesty, kindness, respect, responsibility, and fairness help create strong families, schools, and communities.
Rules and Laws
Students understand why families, schools, and communities have rules and laws, and how following them keeps everyone safe.
Community Helpers
Students discover how different community helpers such as teachers, doctors, firefighters, police officers, nurses, farmers, and postal workers contribute to society.
National Symbols
Students become familiar with important American and Texas symbols, including the U.S. Flag, Texas Flag, Bald Eagle, Liberty Bell, Texas Bluebonnet, and other state symbols.
Texas History & Culture

Students receive an introduction to Texas by learning about its location, capital city (Austin), state flag, state flower, state bird, and famous landmarks.
Important Texans
Students learn about inspiring individuals who contributed to Texas history and society through age-appropriate stories.
Celebrations and Traditions
Students explore important holidays and celebrations observed in Texas and the United States while appreciating different cultures and traditions.
Geography
Maps and Globes
Students learn the difference between maps and globes and understand how they help people locate places and navigate the world.
Landforms and Bodies of Water
Students identify basic landforms and water bodies such as mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans, deserts, plains, and hills.
Cardinal Directions
Students use the four cardinal directions—North, South, East, and West—to describe locations and follow simple maps.
Weather and Environment
Students observe how weather and seasons affect people's clothing, transportation, work, and outdoor activities.
History
Understanding the Past
Students learn the difference between past, present, and future using personal experiences, family events, and timelines.
Historical Figures
Students are introduced to important American leaders and historical figures through simple biographies and inspiring stories.
