Course Overview
Our Texas Grade 1 English Language Arts & Reading (ELAR) course is designed according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. The curriculum helps students develop strong reading, writing, speaking, listening, phonics, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension skills through engaging stories, interactive activities, creative writing, and classroom discussions.
Students learn to read fluently, express their ideas confidently, write meaningful sentences, and develop a lifelong love for reading.
Reading Foundations
Letter Sounds & Phonics
Students strengthen their understanding of letter sounds, blends, digraphs, and word families to improve decoding and reading fluency.
Sight Words
Students learn and recognize frequently used words instantly without sounding them out, helping improve reading speed and confidence.
Reading Simple Sentences
Students practice reading complete sentences with correct pronunciation, punctuation, and expression while improving fluency.
Reading Short Stories
Students read age-appropriate fiction and nonfiction passages, identify characters and settings, and understand the sequence of events.
Reading Fluency
Students develop smooth, accurate, and expressive reading through repeated reading, guided practice, and storytelling activities.
Reading Comprehension
Understanding Stories
Students answer questions about stories by identifying the main idea, characters, setting, and important events.
Sequencing Events
Students learn to arrange events in the correct order using words such as first, next, then, and last.
Making Predictions
Students use pictures, titles, and story clues to predict what may happen next, encouraging critical thinking.
Comparing Stories
Students compare two simple stories by identifying similarities and differences between characters, settings, and events.
Vocabulary Development
Everyday Vocabulary
Students expand their vocabulary by learning words related to family, school, animals, food, weather, transportation, and community life.
Synonyms & Antonyms
Students learn words with similar and opposite meanings to improve communication and comprehension.
Compound Words
Students identify and create compound words by combining two smaller words to form a new meaning.
Context Clues
Students use surrounding words and pictures to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words while reading.
Grammar & Language
Nouns
Students learn to identify naming words such as people, places, animals, and things and use them correctly in sentences.
Verbs
Students recognize action words and understand how verbs describe what people, animals, and objects do.
Adjectives
Students use describing words to make their speaking and writing more interesting and detailed.
Pronouns
Students learn to replace nouns with simple pronouns such as he, she, it, and they to avoid repetition.
Capitalization & Punctuation
Students practice using capital letters, periods, question marks, and exclamation marks correctly in sentences.
Writing Skills
Sentence Writing
Students write complete sentences with proper spacing, capitalization, and punctuation while expressing their own ideas.
Picture-Based Writing
Students observe pictures and write simple descriptive sentences to improve creativity and vocabulary.
Personal Writing
