New York Hindi — Grade 6
Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New York Grade 6 Hindi course takes students to real communicative competence. They read stories, लोक कथाएँ, and कविताएँ independently, write essays and formal letters, and hold extended conversations in देवनागरी.
The foundation strand consolidates the script including संयुक्ताक्षर, with dedicated work on pronunciation and listening comprehension — long and short vowels, nasal sounds, and following spoken instructions.
The grammar strand is the most complete in the sequence: all eight शब्द भेद from संज्ञा to विस्मयादिबोधक, gender and number, pronouns, adjectives with agreement, transitive and intransitive verbs, tenses, sentence structure, postpositions and case usage, questions, and negation.
Students then study literature, poetry, and मुहावरे, write paragraphs, creative pieces, informative essays, and formal letters, translate between Hindi and English, and explore Indian cultural diversity and digital Hindi including typing in Devanagari.

Standards Note
Hindi is a world language elective, not a mandatory New York State subject. New York State schools may offer different world languages, and language programmes vary considerably between districts and schools.
This syllabus is aligned broadly with the New York State Learning Standards for World Languages, which describe communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities rather than prescribing content for any particular language.
There is no single statewide New York Grade 6 Hindi curriculum prescribed for every school. This is one structured Hindi pathway created for this educational programme, suitable both for heritage learners and for students continuing from Grade 5.
It is important to distinguish between the New York State World Languages Learning Standards and the Hindi course structure created for this educational programme, which organises Hindi learning into 32 teachable modules.
