New York Mathematics — Grade 5
Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New York Grade 5 Mathematics course is the bridge into middle school. Students complete their work with fractions and decimals, meet the order of operations and the coordinate plane, and begin genuine algebraic thinking.
The number strand extends place value through the thousandths and introduces powers of ten, consolidating the standard algorithms for all four operations. Students then study factors, multiples, primes, and an introduction to GCF and LCM — the tools that make fraction arithmetic manageable.
The fraction strand covers adding and subtracting with unlike denominators, multiplying fractions, and dividing with fractions. The decimal strand covers place value to thousandths and all four operations, with constant work on the equivalence between fractions and decimals.
The course also covers measurement and unit conversion, volume of rectangular prisms, the coordinate plane, geometry, classifying triangles and quadrilaterals, angles, symmetry, perimeter and area, and data and graphs, closing with real-world mathematics, challenge problems, and Grade 6 readiness.
Place Value & Number Sense
Place Value Through Millions
Students work with whole numbers to the millions. Large numbers appear in real data.
Place Value Through Decimals
Students extend place value to thousandths. Decimal places continue the same pattern.
Expanded Form
Students write numbers as a sum of place values. Expanded form makes each digit’s value explicit.
Standard Form
Students write numbers in usual notation. Standard form is everyday notation.
Word Form
Students write numbers in words. Word form appears in written problems.
Whole Number Addition & Subtraction
Multi-Digit Addition
Students add multi-digit numbers accurately. Place-value alignment is essential.
Multi-Digit Subtraction
Students subtract multi-digit numbers accurately. Multiple exchanges test understanding.
Regrouping
Students regroup across place values. Regrouping is where most errors occur.
Estimation
Students estimate before calculating. Estimates catch large errors immediately.
Mental Math
Students calculate mentally where sensible. Mental strategies are faster than writing.
Whole Number Multiplication
Multi-Digit Multiplication
Students multiply multi-digit numbers. Grade 5 expects full fluency.
Partial Products
Students multiply place values separately. Partial products show what the algorithm hides.
Standard Algorithm
Students use the standard method efficiently. The algorithm is compact once understood.
Area Models
Students use area models for multiplication. Area models justify the algorithm.
Estimation
Students estimate products. Estimating catches order-of-magnitude errors.
Whole Number Division
Multi-Digit Division
Students divide multi-digit numbers. Grade 5 introduces two-digit divisors.
Partial Quotients
Students divide using partial quotients. Partial quotients are flexible and forgiving.
Standard Division Algorithm
Students use the standard method. The algorithm is compact but demanding.
Division With Remainders
Students handle remainders correctly. Remainders must be smaller than the divisor.
Estimation
Students estimate quotients. Estimation guides the first division digit.
Factors, Multiples & Number Properties
Factors
Students find all factors of a number. Factors divide exactly.
Factor Pairs
Students find factor pairs. Factor pairs come from arrays.
Multiples
Students list multiples of a number. Multiples come from the times tables.
Common Factors
Students find factors shared by two numbers. Common factors simplify fractions.
Common Multiples
Students find shared multiples. Common multiples give common denominators.
Numerical Expressions
Numerical Expressions
Students read and write expressions. Expressions represent calculations.
Parentheses
Students use parentheses correctly. Parentheses change the order of work.
Order of Operations
Students apply the order of operations. Order determines the correct answer.
Grouping Symbols
Students use grouping symbols. Grouping makes intent unambiguous.
Evaluating Expressions
Students calculate the value of expressions. Evaluation follows the order of operations.
Patterns & Algebraic Thinking
Number Patterns
Students find and extend number patterns. Patterns lead directly to functions.
Rules
Students state the rule behind a pattern. Stating the rule proves understanding.
Input and Output
Students work with input-output relationships. Inputs and outputs prepare for functions.
Pattern Tables
Students build and read pattern tables. Tables make relationships visible.
Unknown Values
Students find unknown values. Unknowns are the heart of algebra.
Fraction Concepts
Fractions as Numbers
Students treat fractions as genuine numbers. A fraction has a place on the number line.
Numerators and Denominators
Students use fraction vocabulary precisely. The numerator counts; the denominator names.
Unit Fractions
Students work with unit fractions. Unit fractions are the building blocks.
Fraction Models
Students use several fraction models. Multiple models deepen understanding.
Number Lines
Students place fractions on a line. The line proves fractions are numbers.
Adding & Subtracting Fractions
Like Denominators
Students add and subtract with like denominators. Only the numerators change.
Unlike Denominators
Students add and subtract with unlike denominators. This is the key Grade 5 fraction skill.
Equivalent Fractions
Students convert to equivalent fractions. Equivalence makes addition possible.
Common Denominators
Students find common denominators. A common denominator makes the parts the same size.
Adding Fractions
Students add fractions accurately. Addition combines parts of equal size.
Multiplying Fractions
Fraction × Whole Number
Students multiply a fraction by a whole number. This is repeated addition of fractions.
Fraction Models
Students model fraction multiplication. Models justify the procedure.
Multiplication of Fractions
Students multiply two fractions. Multiplying fractions gives a smaller result.
Area Models
Students use area models for fraction products. Area models make the result visible.
Scaling
Students understand multiplication as scaling. Multiplying by less than one shrinks.
Dividing Fractions & Fraction Reasoning
Fraction Division Concepts
Students learn what fraction division means. Division asks how many fit inside.
Fraction ÷ Whole Number
Students divide a fraction by a whole number. This shares a fraction equally.
Whole Number ÷ Fraction Introduction
Students divide a whole number by a fraction. The result is larger than the original.
Sharing Models
Students model division as sharing. Sharing is the intuitive meaning.
Measurement Models
Students model division as measuring. Measurement asks how many fit.
Decimal Place Value
Tenths
Students work with tenths. A tenth is one part of ten.
Hundredths
Students work with hundredths. Hundredths appear in money.
Thousandths
Students work with thousandths. Thousandths are new in Grade 5.
Decimal Place Value
Students explain decimal place value. Each place is a tenth of the last.
Expanded Decimal Form
Students write decimals in expanded form. Expanded form makes each digit’s value clear.

Standards Note
This syllabus is aligned broadly with the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards for Grade 5. It is designed to explain clearly to parents and students what Grade 5 mathematics covers.
New York State schools, districts, and charter schools may use different textbooks, curriculum programmes, pacing guides, lesson sequences, and assessment systems. This syllabus does not claim that every New York school follows the same programme.
This is not the only official Grade 5 Mathematics syllabus in New York. It is one structured pathway through the Grade 5 standards, created for this educational programme.
It is important to distinguish between the New York State Mathematics Learning Standards and the course structure created for this educational programme, which organises those standards into 32 teachable modules.
