New York Hindi — Grade 5
Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New York Grade 5 Hindi course brings students to genuine independence. They read stories, लोककथाएँ, पंचतंत्र tales, and कविताएँ, and write paragraphs, essays, and letters of their own in देवनागरी.
The foundation strand consolidates the script and adds a full phonetics module covering aspirated and unaspirated sounds, अनुस्वार, चंद्रबिंदु, and visarga — the distinctions that make Hindi pronunciation accurate rather than approximate.
The grammar strand is the most complete yet: संज्ञा, लिंग, वचन, सर्वनाम, क्रिया, काल, विशेषण, postpositions and Hindi sentence order, question formation, and negation and sentence transformation.
Students then move into reading comprehension with inference, literature, creative and essay writing, पत्र लेखन, presentation skills, and translation between Hindi and English. The year closes with Indian festivals, traditions, and regional diversity, and Grade 6 readiness.

Standards Note
Hindi is a world language elective, not a mandatory New York State subject. New York State schools may offer different world languages, and language programmes vary considerably between districts and schools.
This syllabus is aligned broadly with the New York State Learning Standards for World Languages, which describe communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities rather than prescribing content for any particular language.
There is no single statewide New York Grade 5 Hindi curriculum prescribed for every school. This is one structured Hindi pathway created for this educational programme, suitable both for heritage learners and for students continuing from Grade 4, with beginner-friendly placement available.
It is important to distinguish between the New York State World Languages Learning Standards and the Hindi course structure created for this educational programme, which organises Hindi learning into 32 teachable modules.
