New York Hindi — Grade 4
Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New York Grade 4 Hindi course moves students from reading words to reading paragraphs, stories, and poems in देवनागरी, and from writing sentences to writing structured paragraphs and creative pieces of their own.
The foundation strand consolidates the alphabet, मात्रा, and संयुक्त अक्षर, with dedicated work on pronunciation, handwriting, spelling, and dictation. Vocabulary expands across everyday life, nature and environment, and time and numbers.
The grammar strand is substantial: संज्ञा, लिंग, वचन, सर्वनाम, क्रिया, काल, विशेषण, क्रिया-विशेषण, Hindi postpositions, and connectors — taught with a full module on agreement and sentence accuracy.
Students then read stories, लोक कथाएँ, Panchatantra tales, and कविताएँ, answer comprehension questions, write creatively, and practise real conversation — greetings, directions, shopping, and everyday requests. The year closes with Indian culture and Hindi in the modern world, including digital Hindi.

Standards Note
Hindi is a world language elective, not a mandatory New York State subject. New York State schools may offer different world languages, and language programmes vary considerably between districts and schools.
This syllabus is aligned broadly with the New York State Learning Standards for World Languages, which describe communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities rather than prescribing content for any particular language.
There is no single statewide New York Grade 4 Hindi curriculum prescribed for every school. This is one structured Hindi pathway created for this educational programme, suitable both for heritage learners and for students continuing from Grade 3.
It is important to distinguish between the New York State World Languages Learning Standards and the Hindi course structure created for this educational programme, which organises Hindi learning into 32 teachable modules.
