Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New Jersey Grade 5 Mathematics course is designed around the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Mathematics (NJSLS-M). Grade 5 develops students’ mathematical fluency and reasoning through place value, multi-digit operations, fractions, decimals, numerical expressions, volume, geometry, coordinate concepts, measurement, data, and real-world problem solving.
Students move toward more advanced mathematical thinking by connecting visual models, equations, numerical strategies, and real-world applications.
Place Value & Whole Numbers
Place Value Systems
Students understand the place-value structure of multi-digit whole numbers and decimals and use it to represent numbers accurately.
Reading & Writing Large Numbers
Students read, write, compare, and represent large whole numbers using standard, word, and expanded forms.
Comparing & Ordering Numbers
Students compare and order whole numbers and decimals using place-value reasoning and mathematical symbols.
Rounding Numbers
Students round whole numbers and decimals to appropriate place values and use rounding to estimate solutions.
Powers of Ten
Students explore how multiplying or dividing by powers of 10 changes the position of digits in a number.
Multi-Digit Multiplication & Division
Multi-Digit Multiplication
Students multiply multi-digit whole numbers using place-value strategies, models, estimation, and standard algorithms.
Partial Products
Students use partial products and area models to understand and explain multi-digit multiplication.
Multi-Digit Division
Students divide multi-digit whole numbers using place-value strategies, equations, models, and standard procedures.
Quotients & Remainders
Students interpret remainders and determine appropriate solutions in different real-world situations.
Estimation & Reasonableness
Students estimate products and quotients and use estimation to check whether exact answers are reasonable.

Students apply the correct order of operations to evaluate expressions accurately.

Students use simple variables to represent unknown or changing quantities.
