Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New Jersey Grade 5 Hindi course is designed as a structured beginner/heritage-language enrichment program aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for World Languages (NJSLS-WL). The course develops Hindi proficiency through listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, Devanagari literacy, cultural understanding, and interpersonal communication.
Grade 5 students move beyond basic sentence formation toward longer conversations, paragraph-level reading and writing, more advanced grammar, storytelling, presentations, practical communication, and cultural exploration.
Hindi Communication & Conversation
Personal Introduction
Students confidently introduce themselves and talk about their family, school, hobbies, interests, preferences, and daily life using complete Hindi sentences.
Everyday Conversations
Students participate in conversations about school, family, friends, food, shopping, travel, weather, hobbies, and everyday activities.
Asking & Answering Questions
Students use Hindi question words such as क्या, कौन, कहाँ, कब, क्यों, कैसे, कितना, कितने to ask and answer increasingly detailed questions.
Expressing Opinions
Students express likes, dislikes, preferences, simple opinions, agreement, disagreement, and reasons in Hindi.
Practical Communication
Students practice Hindi for real-life situations such as shopping, ordering food, asking for directions, making requests, and interacting with others.
Devanagari Reading & Writing
Devanagari Fluency
Students strengthen their understanding of vowels, consonants, मात्रा, संयुक्त अक्षर, and common spelling patterns.
Reading Complex Words
Students read longer and more complex Hindi words containing multiple syllables, मात्रा combinations, and संयुक्त अक्षर.
Dictation & Spelling
Students listen to Hindi words and sentences and accurately write them in Devanagari.
Handwriting & Written Presentation
Students improve handwriting, spacing, alignment, spelling, punctuation, and overall written presentation.
Paragraph Writing
Students write connected paragraphs about familiar topics using appropriate vocabulary, sentence structures, and transitions.
Hindi Vocabulary Development
Family & Relationships
Students expand vocabulary related to family members, relatives, friendships, relationships, emotions, and social interactions.
School & Education
Students learn vocabulary related to subjects, classrooms, teachers, assignments, examinations, books, activities, and school routines.
Food & Cooking
Students learn vocabulary for ingredients, fruits, vegetables, meals, spices, cooking methods, snacks, and beverages.
Health & Well-Being
Students learn basic Hindi vocabulary related to health, body parts, exercise, healthy habits, feelings, and everyday well-being.
Travel & Transportation
Students learn vocabulary related to transportation, tickets, destinations, directions, hotels, travel plans, and common travel situations.

संज्ञा (Nouns)
Students identify and use nouns for people, animals, places, objects, and ideas in increasingly complex sentences.
सर्वनाम (Pronouns)
Students use personal, demonstrative, and other common pronouns appropriately in conversation and writing.
क्रिया (Verbs)
Students use common Hindi verbs to describe actions, routines, experiences, and events.
लिंग (Gender)
Students identify masculine and feminine forms and apply appropriate grammatical agreement.
वचन (Singular & Plural)
Students use singular and plural forms accurately in sentences and descriptions.

Sentence Formation
Students construct grammatically meaningful Hindi sentences using appropriate word order.
Positive & Negative Sentences
Students form affirmative and negative sentences using common Hindi grammatical structures.
Question Formation
Students construct questions using appropriate question words and respond using complete sentences.
Sentence Expansion
Students expand simple sentences by adding descriptions, locations, time expressions, reasons, and additional information.
Connecting Ideas
Students connect sentences using words such as और, लेकिन, क्योंकि, इसलिए, फिर, पहले, बाद में to create more organized communication.
Hindi Verb Usage & Tenses
Present Tense
Students describe current actions, regular habits, routines, and ongoing activities using appropriate Hindi verb forms.
Past Tense
Students describe completed actions, past experiences, and events using age-appropriate Hindi structures.
Future Tense
Students discuss plans, intentions, predictions, and future activities using appropriate expressions.
Verb Agreement
Students practice appropriate verb forms based on the subject, gender, number, and grammatical context.
Common Auxiliary Verbs
Students use common forms such as है, हैं, था, थे, होगी, होगा and other age-appropriate structures.
Hindi Reading Comprehension
Short Literary Passages
Students read age-appropriate Hindi stories, poems, dialogues, and other literary passages.
Informational Passages
Students read simple nonfiction passages about science, nature, culture, geography, people, and everyday topics.
Main Idea & Supporting Details
Students identify the central idea of a passage and locate important details that support it.
Sequencing Events
Students identify the correct order of events in stories, conversations, instructions, and informational passages.
Making Inferences
Students use information from a passage and contextual clues to draw simple conclusions.

Sentence & Paragraph Writing
Students write grammatically meaningful sentences and organized paragraphs about familiar topics.
Descriptive Writing
Students describe people, places, animals, objects, experiences, and events using precise Hindi vocabulary.
Picture Composition
Students analyze pictures and write connected sentences describing people, actions, objects, surroundings, and events.
Personal Writing
Students write about family, school, hobbies, experiences, goals, preferences, and daily activities.
Creative Writing
Students create short stories, dialogues, poems, descriptions, and imaginative compositions in Hindi.

Students listen to conversations, stories, instructions, announcements, and descriptions and identify important information.
Pronunciation & Fluency
Students improve pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, sentence flow, and confidence while speaking Hindi.
Picture-Based Speaking
Students describe pictures and situations using complete and connected Hindi sentences.
Role-Play Conversations
Students participate in practical role plays involving shopping, restaurants, school, travel, family situations, and community interactions.
Story Retelling
Students listen to or read a short story and retell it using appropriate sequence, vocabulary, and sentence structures.

Students read and listen to age-appropriate Hindi stories and identify characters, settings, events, conflicts, and messages.

Students describe characters’ personalities, actions, feelings, motivations, and relationships.

Students identify the beginning, middle, important events, problem, solution, and conclusion of a story.
Hindi Poetry
Students read, understand, recite, and discuss age-appropriate Hindi poems to develop vocabulary, rhythm, pronunciation, and expression.
Moral & Value-Based Literature
Students explore stories and poems that communicate values such as honesty, kindness, courage, cooperation, respect, and responsibility.
Indian Culture & Heritage
Indian Festivals
Students explore festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Dussehra, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, Makar Sankranti, Eid, and Christmas through Hindi-language activities.
Indian Food & Traditions
Students learn Hindi vocabulary related to Indian foods, clothing, family traditions, celebrations, and cultural practices.
Indian Music & Dance
Students explore Indian music, classical and folk dance, songs, instruments, and cultural performances.
Indian Geography
Students learn Hindi vocabulary while exploring India’s states, major cities, rivers, mountains, landmarks, and geographical regions.

Hindi Projects & Enrichment
Hindi Vocabulary Project
Students create illustrated vocabulary collections covering topics such as family, school, food, nature, travel, health, and culture.
Hindi Story Project
Students write, illustrate, and present an original Hindi story with characters, setting, events, and a conclusion.
Cultural Research Project
Students research an Indian state, festival, city, landmark, food, personality, art form, or cultural tradition and present their findings in Hindi.
Hindi Presentation Project
Students prepare a short presentation using pictures, written information, vocabulary, and spoken Hindi.
Hindi Portfolio
Students maintain a learning portfolio containing reading passages, writing samples, vocabulary activities, grammar exercises, stories, projects, and assessments.
