Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New Jersey Grade 4 Hindi course is designed as a beginner/heritage-language enrichment program aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for World Languages (NJSLS-WL). The program develops Hindi proficiency through listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, Devanagari literacy, cultural understanding, and interpersonal communication.
At Grade 4, students progress from basic sentences toward short connected conversations, paragraph-level reading and writing, more structured grammar, storytelling, presentations, and real-life communication.
Hindi Communication & Conversation
Personal Introductions
Students introduce themselves and discuss their name, age, school, family, hobbies, interests, and personal preferences using complete Hindi sentences.
Everyday Conversations
Students participate in short conversations about school, family, friends, food, shopping, hobbies, travel, weather, and daily activities.
Asking & Answering Questions
Students ask and answer questions using common Hindi question words such as क्या, कौन, कहाँ, कब, क्यों, कैसे, कितना.
Expressing Opinions & Preferences
Students express likes, dislikes, preferences, simple opinions, and reasons using increasingly complete sentences.
Practical Hindi Communication
Students practice Hindi used in familiar real-life situations such as greeting someone, asking for directions, ordering food, shopping, and requesting help.
Devanagari Reading & Writing
Devanagari Fluency
Students strengthen recognition and pronunciation of Hindi vowels, consonants, मात्रा, and commonly used संयुक्त अक्षर.
Complex Word Reading
Students read longer Hindi words containing multiple syllables, मात्रा combinations, and संयुक्त अक्षर.
Spelling & Dictation
Students listen to Hindi words and sentences and accurately reproduce them in Devanagari script.
Handwriting & Presentation
Students improve handwriting, letter formation, spacing, alignment, spelling, and overall written presentation.
Paragraph Writing in Devanagari
Students write short connected paragraphs about familiar topics using appropriate vocabulary and sentence structures.
Hindi Vocabulary Development
Family & Relationships
Students expand vocabulary related to family members, relatives, relationships, friendship, and social interactions.
School & Education
Students learn vocabulary related to subjects, classrooms, teachers, assignments, books, examinations, activities, and school routines.

Students learn vocabulary for ingredients, fruits, vegetables, meals, spices, cooking activities, snacks, and beverages.

Students describe clothing, colors, body features, physical appearance, and personal preferences.

Students identify and use nouns for people, animals, places, objects, and concepts in increasingly complex sentences.
सर्वनाम (Pronouns)
Students use common Hindi pronouns appropriately in different conversational and writing situations.
क्रिया (Verbs)
Students use common Hindi verbs to describe actions, activities, routines, and events.
लिंग (Gender)
Students identify masculine and feminine nouns and use appropriate grammatical forms.
वचन (Singular & Plural)
Students distinguish between singular and plural forms and apply appropriate word forms in sentences.

Students construct meaningful Hindi sentences using appropriate word order and basic grammatical structures.
Positive & Negative Sentences
Students form affirmative and negative sentences using common Hindi structures.
Question Sentences
Students construct questions and provide complete responses using appropriate question words and sentence patterns.

Students expand simple sentences by adding descriptions, locations, time expressions, reasons, and additional information.

Students connect related ideas using simple conjunctions and transition words to create short connected passages.

Present-Tense Expressions
Students describe current actions, habits, routines, and regular activities using appropriate Hindi verb forms.
Past-Tense Expressions
Students describe completed actions and past events using age-appropriate Hindi sentence structures.
Future-Tense Expressions
Students describe plans, intentions, and future activities using simple future-oriented expressions.
Verb Agreement
Students practice using appropriate verb forms with different subjects and grammatical contexts.
Everyday Action Verbs

Students learn Hindi vocabulary related to regional foods, clothing, family traditions, celebrations, and cultural practices.
Indian Music, Dance & Arts
Students explore Hindi songs, Indian classical and folk traditions, dance forms, visual arts, and cultural expressions.

Students develop basic Hindi vocabulary while learning about India’s states, major cities, rivers, mountains, landmarks, and regions.

Students learn that India has many languages, traditions, communities, and cultural practices and develop respect for this diversity.

Students create illustrated vocabulary collections covering topics such as family, food, school, animals, nature, and travel.
Hindi Story Project
Students create and present a short original Hindi story using characters, settings, events, and a conclusion.
Cultural Research Project
Students research an Indian festival, state, city, food, landmark, historical figure, or cultural tradition and present their findings in Hindi.
Hindi Presentation Project
Students prepare short presentations using pictures, written sentences, vocabulary, and spoken Hindi.
Hindi Learning Portfolio
Students maintain a portfolio containing writing samples, reading activities, vocabulary exercises, stories, projects, and assessments.
