Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New Jersey Grade 3 English Language Arts (ELA) course is designed around the 2023 New Jersey Student Learning Standards for English Language Arts (NJSLS-ELA). Grade 3 strengthens independent reading and writing while developing deeper skills in literary analysis, informational reading, vocabulary, grammar, research, opinion writing, informative writing, narrative writing, speaking, and listening.
Foundational Reading & Word Study
Advanced Phonics
Students apply grade-level phonics and word-analysis strategies to decode unfamiliar words accurately.
Prefixes & Suffixes
Students identify common prefixes and suffixes and use them to understand and decode unfamiliar words.
Multisyllabic Words
Students break longer words into syllables and use word parts to read and understand them.
Irregular & High-Frequency Words
Students develop automatic recognition of frequently used words and irregular words that require special attention.
Word Analysis
Students examine parts of words to understand spelling, pronunciation, and meaning.
Reading Fluency
Accurate Reading
Students read grade-level texts accurately while applying appropriate decoding and word-recognition strategies.
Reading With Expression
Students develop appropriate pace, phrasing, rhythm, and expression while reading aloud.
Reading for Purpose
Students adjust their reading approach depending on whether they are reading for information, enjoyment, or a specific task.
Self-Correction
Students use context, rereading, and word-analysis strategies to recognize and correct reading errors.
Independent Reading
Students build reading stamina and become increasingly independent when reading grade-level literary and informational texts.

Students identify characters, settings, events, problems, solutions, and other important elements of literary texts.
Theme & Central Message
Students determine the lesson, theme, or central message of stories, fables, folktales, and myths.
Character Traits & Motivation
Students describe characters’ traits, feelings, motivations, and actions and explain how those actions affect the story.
Sequence of Events
Students explain how events develop in a story and how one event can lead to another.
Point of View
Students distinguish their own perspective from the perspective of a narrator or character.
Informational Reading
Main Idea & Key Details
Students identify the main idea of informational texts and explain how important details support it.
Text Structure
Students recognize relationships such as sequence, cause and effect, comparison, and problem and solution.
Text Features
Students use headings, captions, diagrams, charts, glossaries, photographs, and other features to locate and understand information.
Academic Vocabulary
Students determine the meaning of general academic and subject-specific words using context and reference tools.
Author’s Purpose
Students identify why an author created a text and how the author’s purpose influences the presentation of information.
Vocabulary Development
Context Clues
Students use surrounding words, sentences, and paragraphs to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Roots, Prefixes & Suffixes
Students use familiar word parts to determine the meaning of new words.
Multiple-Meaning Words
Students determine which meaning of a word is appropriate based on how it is used in a sentence.
Literal & Nonliteral Language
Students distinguish between literal meanings and expressions that communicate a different or figurative meaning.
Shades of Meaning
Students compare related words and choose vocabulary that communicates the intended meaning precisely.

Parts of Speech
Students identify and correctly use nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, and other common parts of speech.
Subject-Verb Agreement
Students ensure that subjects and verbs agree correctly in number and use appropriate verb forms.
Verb Tenses
Students use consistent past, present, and future verb tenses when speaking and writing.
Pronouns
Students use pronouns correctly and make sure their referents are clear.
Plural & Possessive Forms
Students correctly form regular and irregular plurals and singular and plural possessives.
Spelling & Writing Conventions
Complex Spelling Patterns
Students practice spelling words containing less common spelling patterns and complex letter combinations.
Multisyllabic Spelling
Students spell regular two- and three-syllable words using familiar syllable patterns.
Common Prefixes & Suffixes
Students correctly spell words containing common prefixes and suffixes.
Capitalization
Students apply capitalization rules, including capitalization of appropriate words in titles and proper nouns.
Punctuation
Students correctly use periods, question marks, exclamation points, commas, apostrophes, and quotation marks.
Opinion Writing
Stating an Opinion
Students clearly introduce an opinion about a topic or issue.
Supporting Reasons
Students support opinions using reasons, facts, examples, and relevant information.
Linking Ideas
Students use transition words and phrases to connect ideas and create a logical flow.
Writing Conclusions
Students write conclusions that clearly connect to and reinforce their opinions.
Revising Opinion Writing
Students review their opinions, reasons, evidence, organization, grammar, and punctuation to improve their writing.

Introducing a Topic
Students introduce a subject clearly and establish what they will explain or teach the reader.
Facts & Details
Students develop topics using facts, definitions, examples, concrete details, and information from texts.
