Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New Jersey Grade 2 Social Studies course is designed around the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Social Studies (NJSLS-SS). New Jersey's K–2 Social Studies framework develops foundational knowledge of civics, history, geography, economics, culture, communities, government, citizenship, and historical thinking.
Grade 2 students expand their understanding beyond their immediate surroundings to explore local communities, New Jersey, the United States, cultural diversity, government, economic choices, geography, and changes over time.
Communities & Citizenship
What Makes a Community?
Students explore different types of communities and understand how people live, work, learn, and cooperate within them.
Community Roles
Students identify the different roles people play in a community and understand how individuals contribute to community life.
Rules & Responsibilities
Students understand why communities create rules and learn how following rules helps maintain safety, fairness, and cooperation.
Being a Good Citizen
Students learn how responsible citizens help others, respect community rules, participate in activities, and contribute positively to society.
Government & Civics
Purpose of Government
Students learn why communities need government and how government helps organize society and provide services.
Local Government
Students explore how local governments serve communities through schools, roads, libraries, parks, public safety, and other services.
State & National Government
Students receive an age-appropriate introduction to New Jersey state government and the government of the United States.
Leaders & Elections
Students learn that communities choose leaders and explore the basic idea of elections and voting.
Rights & Responsibilities
Students understand that people have rights as well as responsibilities and learn how these ideas support a fair community.

New Jersey Symbols
Students learn about important New Jersey symbols, landmarks, traditions, and places that represent the state's identity.
United States Symbols
Students identify important national symbols such as the American flag, Statue of Liberty, national monuments, and other symbols of the United States.
National Holidays
Students explore important American holidays and learn about the people, events, and values associated with them.
New Jersey Communities
Students explore different communities throughout New Jersey and compare how people live in urban, suburban, and rural areas.
New Jersey History
Indigenous Peoples of New Jersey
Students learn about the Lenape and other Indigenous peoples who have historical connections to the land that is now New Jersey.
Early New Jersey Communities
Students explore how early communities developed and how people used the land and resources around them.
Important Historical People
Students learn about selected individuals who contributed to the history and development of New Jersey and the United States.

Students explore age-appropriate historical events and understand how events can influence communities and people's lives.

Students compare New Jersey communities, transportation, schools, homes, work, and communication from the past with life today.

Maps & Globes
Students use simple maps and globes to identify locations, communities, states, countries, and geographic features.

Students use geographic vocabulary such as north, south, east, west, near, far, left, and right to describe locations.
Landforms
Students identify mountains, hills, valleys, plains, plateaus, islands, and other common landforms.
Bodies of Water
Students identify oceans, rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, and other bodies of water and understand their importance to communities.

Students explore New Jersey's major geographic regions, rivers, coastline, neighboring states, and communities.

How People Use Land
Students explore how people use land for homes, schools, farms, businesses, transportation, recreation, and other activities.
Natural Resources
Students identify natural resources such as water, soil, forests, plants, animals, and minerals.
