New Jersey Mathematics — Grade 2
Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New Jersey Grade 2 Mathematics course is designed around the 2023 New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Mathematics (NJSLS-M). The curriculum develops strong foundations in addition and subtraction, place value, measurement, time, money, data literacy, geometry, mathematical reasoning, and early multiplication concepts.
Students build fluency and confidence through hands-on activities, visual models, real-world word problems, mathematical puzzles, and problem-solving strategies. The New Jersey Grade 2 standards place major emphasis on addition/subtraction problem solving, place value, and measurement.

Students solve problems that require two operations and organize information before calculating.
Unknown Numbers
Students solve problems where the unknown may represent the beginning amount, change, or final amount.
Mathematical Models
Students use drawings, number lines, equations, and objects to represent real-world mathematical situations.
Foundations of Multiplication
Equal Groups
Students understand multiplication as groups containing the same number of objects.
Odd & Even Numbers
Students determine whether groups contain an odd or even number of objects by pairing or counting by twos.
Repeated Addition
Students represent equal groups using repeated addition and connect the idea to early multiplication.
Arrays
Students arrange objects into rows and columns and use addition to find the total number of objects.
Multiplication Patterns
Students recognize simple patterns created by equal groups and repeated addition as preparation for Grade 3 multiplication.
Measurement
Measuring Length
Students measure objects using appropriate standard tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
Inches, Feet, Centimeters & Meters
Students estimate and measure lengths using common U.S. customary and metric units.
Comparing Lengths
Students determine how much longer or shorter one object is compared with another.
Measurement Word Problems
Students use addition and subtraction to solve real-world problems involving lengths measured in the same units.
Number Lines & Measurement
Students represent whole numbers as distances on number lines and use number lines to model addition and subtraction.
Time & Money
Telling Time
Students tell and write time to the nearest five minutes using analog and digital clocks.
A.M. & P.M.
Students distinguish between morning and afternoon/evening times and connect clock readings to daily activities.
U.S. Coins & Bills
Students identify pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills and understand their values.
Counting Money
Students determine the total value of combinations of coins and bills.
Money Word Problems
Students solve everyday problems involving purchases, amounts of money, and comparing monetary values.
Data Literacy
Understanding Data
Students learn that data is information collected to answer questions and that data can vary.
Collecting Data
Students collect simple information through observations, measurements, surveys, and classroom activities.
Line Plots
Students represent measurement data using simple line plots with whole-number units.
Picture Graphs
Students create and interpret picture graphs representing data from several categories.
Bar Graphs
Students create and interpret bar graphs using a single-unit scale and solve simple comparison problems.
Geometry & Shapes
Identifying Shapes
Students identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, cubes, and other common geometric shapes.
Shape Attributes
Students classify and describe shapes according to characteristics such as sides, angles, faces, and equal parts.
Drawing Shapes
Students draw shapes with specified characteristics and compare shapes based on their attributes.
Arrays & Rectangles
Students partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal-sized squares and count the total number of squares.
