Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New Jersey Grade 2 Hindi course is designed as a beginner/heritage-language program aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for World Languages (NJSLS-WL). New Jersey organizes World Languages standards by proficiency levels and grade bands, with Novice Low by the end of Grade 2. Hindi may be offered as a world language or heritage language based on local program needs.
The course strengthens Hindi listening, speaking, reading, writing, Devanagari literacy, vocabulary, basic grammar, everyday communication, and cultural understanding through age-appropriate activities.
Hindi Communication Foundations
Greetings & Introductions
Students practice Hindi greetings and introduce themselves by sharing their name, age, class, and basic personal information.
Everyday Conversations
Students participate in short conversations about familiar topics such as family, school, friends, food, hobbies, and daily activities.
Classroom Communication
Students understand and respond to common Hindi classroom instructions, questions, requests, and expressions.
Asking & Answering Questions
Students practice simple questions using words such as क्या, कौन, कहाँ, कब, कैसे and provide short appropriate answers.
Devanagari Reading & Writing
Hindi Vowels (स्वर)
Students review and strengthen recognition, pronunciation, and writing of Hindi vowels.
Hindi Consonants (व्यंजन)
Students practice reading and writing common Devanagari consonants and connecting letters with their sounds.
मात्रा Practice
Students learn and apply common vowel signs such as ा, ि, ी, ु, ू, े, ै, ो, ौ when reading and writing words.
संयुक्त अक्षर Introduction
Students receive an age-appropriate introduction to commonly encountered combined consonant forms in Hindi words.
Handwriting Practice
Students improve Devanagari handwriting, letter formation, spacing, alignment, and writing accuracy.
Hindi Word Formation
Building Words
Students combine consonants and मात्रा to construct and read familiar Hindi words.
One & Two-Syllable Words
Students read and write simple words and gradually move toward longer, familiar vocabulary.
Word Families
Students recognize common patterns in Hindi words and use familiar sound and spelling relationships to read new words.
Dictation
Students listen to familiar Hindi words and write them correctly in Devanagari.

Family & Friends
Students expand vocabulary related to parents, siblings, grandparents, relatives, friends, and relationships.
School & Classroom
Students learn vocabulary for school subjects, classroom objects, teachers, books, notebooks, and school activities.
Food & Drinks
Students learn names of common foods, fruits, vegetables, snacks, meals, and beverages.
Animals & Birds
Students identify common animals and birds and use their Hindi names in simple sentences.
Colors, Shapes & Objects
Students describe familiar objects using Hindi words for colors, shapes, sizes, and basic characteristics.
Numbers, Time & Everyday Language
Hindi Numbers
Students practice Hindi numbers and use them for counting, quantities, age, and simple everyday situations.
Days & Months
Students learn Hindi names for days of the week and months and use them in simple expressions.
Time & Daily Schedule
Students learn basic vocabulary for morning, afternoon, evening, night, and common daily routines.
Weather Vocabulary
Students learn simple expressions related to गर्मी, सर्दी, बारिश, धूप, बादल, हवा and describe familiar weather conditions.
Basic Hindi Grammar
संज्ञा (Nouns)
Students identify naming words for people, animals, places, objects, and things.
सर्वनाम (Pronouns)
Students use common pronouns such as मैं, हम, तुम, आप, यह, वह, ये, वे in simple sentences.
क्रिया (Verbs)
Students learn common action words and use them in simple sentences about everyday activities.
लिंग (Gender)
Students develop an introductory understanding of masculine and feminine forms in commonly used Hindi words.
एकवचन एवं बहुवचन
Students distinguish between singular and plural forms and practice using them in simple sentences.

Pronunciation & Intonation
Students improve pronunciation and practice natural rhythm and intonation while speaking Hindi.

Students participate in simple role plays involving greetings, shopping, school, family, restaurants, and everyday situations.

Students observe a picture and write simple Hindi sentences describing people, objects, actions, and surroundings.

Students write short descriptions about themselves, their family, favorite activities, school, and experiences.

Story Sequencing
Students arrange story events in the correct order and retell familiar stories using simple Hindi.
Hindi Poems & Rhymes
Students learn age-appropriate Hindi poems, rhymes, and songs to improve pronunciation, rhythm, vocabulary, and listening skills.
Indian Festivals
Students learn about festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Raksha Bandhan, Dussehra, and Makar Sankranti through stories, vocabulary, and creative activities.
