Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New Jersey Grade 2 English Language Arts (ELA) course is designed around the 2023 New Jersey Student Learning Standards for English Language Arts (NJSLS-ELA). The curriculum strengthens phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, writing, speaking, listening, and research skills.
Students progress from foundational reading toward greater independence in understanding literary and informational texts, organizing written ideas, participating in discussions, and conducting simple research.
Foundational Reading & Phonics
Phonological Awareness
Students identify, blend, segment, and manipulate sounds and syllables to strengthen accurate word reading.
Advanced Phonics
Students apply common letter-sound relationships, vowel patterns, consonant patterns, and spelling conventions to decode unfamiliar words.
Vowel Teams & Word Patterns
Students recognize common vowel teams, diphthongs, r-controlled vowels, and other grade-level spelling patterns.
Multisyllabic Words
Students break longer words into syllables and use familiar patterns to decode and pronounce them accurately.
Irregular & High-Frequency Words
Students develop automatic recognition of frequently used words and words that do not follow common spelling patterns.
Reading Fluency
Accurate Reading
Students read grade-level text accurately while applying phonics and word-recognition strategies.
Reading Rate & Expression
Students develop appropriate pacing, phrasing, and expression to make reading smoother and easier to understand.

Students describe the order of important events and use appropriate sequence words when retelling a text.
Making Inferences
Students use clues and evidence from a text to make reasonable conclusions about characters, events, and ideas.
Summarizing
Students identify the most important information from a text and provide a concise summary.

Students identify characters, settings, major events, problems, solutions, and important details in stories.
Character Analysis
Students describe characters' traits, motivations, feelings, actions, and responses to events.
Theme & Central Message
Students identify the lesson, message, or main idea of a story and explain how events support it.
Poetry
Students read and respond to poems while exploring rhyme, rhythm, repetition, imagery, and figurative language appropriate for their grade level.
Comparing Stories
Students compare characters, settings, events, themes, and approaches across two or more stories.
Informational Text
Main Topic & Supporting Details
Students identify the main topic of informational texts and explain how supporting details develop the topic.
Text Features
Students use headings, captions, bold print, glossaries, indexes, diagrams, and other text features to find information.
Author's Purpose
Students identify whether an author is primarily informing, explaining, describing, or communicating another purpose.
Connections Between Ideas
Students identify relationships between ideas, facts, events, and concepts presented in informational texts.
Comparing Informational Texts
Students compare information presented in two texts about the same topic and identify similarities and differences.
Vocabulary Development
Context Clues
Students use surrounding words and sentences to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases.
Word Parts
Students use common prefixes, suffixes, roots, and inflectional endings to understand unfamiliar words.
Synonyms & Antonyms
Students identify words with similar and opposite meanings and use them appropriately.
Multiple-Meaning Words
Students determine the correct meaning of a word with multiple meanings based on its context.
Shades of Meaning
Students recognize subtle differences between related words and choose vocabulary that communicates ideas precisely.

Sentence Structure
Students write complete sentences and use different sentence structures to communicate ideas clearly.
Nouns & Pronouns
Students identify and correctly use common nouns, proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, and pronouns.
Verbs & Verb Tenses
Students use action verbs and basic past, present, and future verb forms correctly.
Adjectives & Adverbs
Students use descriptive words to provide more information about people, places, objects, actions, and events.
Capitalization & Punctuation
Students correctly apply capitalization and punctuation conventions, including commas, apostrophes, quotation marks, and end punctuation.

Students organize ideas logically and use transition words to connect sentences and paragraphs.
Revising & Editing
Students review their writing, improve word choice and organization, and correct spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation.
