Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New Jersey Grade 1 Hindi course is designed as a beginner/heritage-language program aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for World Languages (NJSLS-WL) for the K–2 Novice Low proficiency band. New Jersey's World Languages standards are proficiency-based rather than organized as a separate Hindi-specific grade-level syllabus, and districts may offer languages based on their community needs. Hindi can therefore be taught as a world language or heritage language.
The course introduces young learners to Hindi speaking, listening, reading, writing, Devanagari script, vocabulary, basic grammar, everyday communication, and Indian culture through age-appropriate activities.
Introduction to Hindi
Hindi Language & Culture
Students are introduced to Hindi as a language and explore its importance in Indian culture and everyday communication.
Hindi Greetings
Students learn common greetings such as नमस्ते, सुप्रभात, धन्यवाद, अलविदा and practice using them in simple conversations.
Introducing Yourself
Students learn to say their name, age, class, and basic information about themselves in Hindi.
Classroom Hindi
Students learn common classroom words and expressions used to communicate with teachers and classmates.
Devanagari Script
Hindi Vowels (स्वर)
Students recognize and write basic Hindi vowels such as अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ.
Hindi Consonants (व्यंजन)
Students learn common Hindi consonants and practice associating each letter with its corresponding sound.
Letter Formation
Students practice correct formation, direction, spacing, and handwriting of Devanagari letters.
Letter-Sound Recognition
Students connect written Hindi letters with their sounds to develop early reading skills.
Hindi Phonics & Word Formation
अक्षर पहचान
Students identify Hindi letters quickly and distinguish between similar-looking Devanagari characters.
मात्रा परिचय
Students learn common vowel signs (मात्राएँ) and understand how they change the pronunciation of consonants.
Simple Word Formation
Students combine letters and मात्रा to read and write simple Hindi words.
Reading Simple Words
Students practice reading familiar words related to family, school, colors, animals, food, and everyday life.
Hindi Vocabulary
Numbers
Students learn Hindi numbers and practice counting and recognizing quantities in everyday situations.
Colors & Shapes
Students learn the Hindi names of common colors and shapes through pictures, games, and activities.
Animals & Birds
Students learn vocabulary for common animals and birds and use the words in simple sentences.
Food & Fruits
Students learn names of common foods, fruits, vegetables, and beverages used in everyday conversations.
School Vocabulary
Students learn words related to classrooms, books, pencils, teachers, subjects, and school activities.
Family & Everyday Life
My Family
Students learn vocabulary for family members such as माता, पिता, भाई, बहन, दादा, दादी and describe their families.
Body Parts
Students identify common body parts and use simple Hindi expressions related to them.
Clothes
Students learn Hindi vocabulary for common clothing and describe what people are wearing.
Daily Activities
Students learn simple expressions for activities such as eating, drinking, playing, reading, sleeping, and going to school.
Basic Hindi Grammar
Naming Words (संज्ञा)
Students recognize common naming words for people, places, animals, objects, and things.
Pronouns (सर्वनाम)
Students learn basic pronouns such as मैं, तुम, आप, वह, यह, हम and use them in simple sentences.
Action Words (क्रिया)
Students learn common action words such as खाना, जाना, आना, खेलना, पढ़ना, लिखना.
Singular & Plural
Students recognize basic differences between singular and plural words and practice using them correctly.
Gender Awareness
Students receive an age-appropriate introduction to masculine and feminine forms in Hindi.
Simple Hindi Sentences
Sentence Formation
Students construct short sentences using familiar vocabulary and basic Hindi sentence patterns.
Describing People & Objects
Students use simple words and sentences to describe people, animals, objects, and places.
Asking Simple Questions
Students learn basic question words and expressions such as क्या, कौन, कहाँ, कब, क्यों.
Answering Questions
Students practice giving short answers to simple questions about themselves, family, school, and everyday activities.

Students listen to simple Hindi words, instructions, stories, and conversations and identify familiar information.
Everyday Conversations
Students practice short conversations related to greetings, introductions, family, school, food, and daily activities.
Pronunciation
Students develop accurate pronunciation of Hindi sounds and practice speaking clearly.
Classroom Communication
Students learn to understand and respond to simple instructions and questions in Hindi.

Reading Short Sentences
Students read short, familiar Hindi sentences using previously learned letters, मात्रा, and vocabulary.
Copy Writing
Students practice copying words and short sentences accurately to improve handwriting and Devanagari familiarity.
Dictation
Students listen to familiar Hindi words and write them using appropriate Devanagari letters.
Guided Writing
Students write simple words and sentences about themselves, family, school, animals, and familiar experiences.
Hindi Stories & Poems
Simple Hindi Stories
Students listen to and read age-appropriate Hindi stories while identifying characters, events, and basic lessons.
Picture-Based Stories
Students use pictures to understand and retell simple stories using familiar Hindi vocabulary.
Hindi Rhymes & Poems
Students learn simple Hindi poems, rhymes, and songs to develop pronunciation, rhythm, vocabulary, and listening skills.
Story Retelling
Students retell familiar stories using simple words, phrases, and sentences.
Indian Culture & Traditions
Indian Festivals
Students learn about festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Dussehra, Raksha Bandhan, and Makar Sankranti through age-appropriate stories and activities.
Indian Food & Traditions
Students explore common Indian foods, family traditions, clothing, music, and cultural practices.
Indian Places
Students are introduced to famous places and landmarks in India through pictures, stories, and simple Hindi vocabulary.
Respect for Cultural Diversity
Students learn to appreciate different languages, cultures, traditions, and ways of life.
