Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our New Jersey Grade 1 English Language Arts (ELA) course is designed around the 2023 New Jersey Student Learning Standards for English Language Arts (NJSLS-ELA). The curriculum develops foundational skills in phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, grammar, writing, comprehension, speaking, listening, and early research skills.
Students build confidence in reading and writing through stories, informational texts, discussions, creative activities, and age-appropriate writing projects.
Foundational Reading Skills
Print Concepts
Students understand how written language works, including sentence structure, spaces between words, capitalization, and ending punctuation.
Phonological Awareness
Students identify, blend, segment, and manipulate individual sounds and syllables in spoken words.
Long & Short Vowels
Students distinguish between long and short vowel sounds and connect sounds with their written forms.
Consonants, Digraphs & Blends
Students recognize common consonant sounds, digraphs, and consonant blends while developing accurate word-reading skills.
Phonics & Word Recognition
One-Syllable Words
Students decode regularly spelled one-syllable words using familiar sound and spelling patterns.
Vowel Teams & Silent E
Students learn common spelling patterns such as final -e and vowel teams that represent long vowel sounds.
Two-Syllable Words
Students break words into syllables and use vowel sounds and spelling patterns to decode longer words.
High-Frequency Words
Students develop automatic recognition of frequently used and irregular words to improve reading fluency.

Students answer who, what, where, when, why, and how questions using details from a text.

Students identify characters, settings, major events, and the sequence of events in literary texts.
Central Message
Students identify the central message or lesson of a story and retell important events in sequence.

Students read stories and identify characters, settings, events, problems, solutions, and important details.

Students read nonfiction texts to identify facts, main ideas, key details, and relationships between pieces of information.

Students use headings, tables of contents, glossaries, diagrams, illustrations, and other features to locate information.

Students explain how pictures, diagrams, and other visual elements provide information or support ideas in a text.
Comparing Texts
Students identify similarities and differences between two literary or informational texts about the same topic.
Vocabulary Development
Meaning of Unknown Words
Students use context, word parts, and other strategies to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Multiple-Meaning Words
Students recognize that some words have more than one meaning and determine the appropriate meaning from context.
Word Categories
Students group words into categories such as animals, colors, clothing, foods, places, and objects.
Synonyms & Word Relationships
Students explore words with similar meanings and understand relationships between words.
Shades of Meaning
Students distinguish between words with slightly different meanings or levels of intensity, such as look, peek, glance, and stare.
Grammar & Language
Sentence Structure
Students write complete sentences and distinguish complete sentences from sentence fragments.
Capitalization
Students correctly capitalize the first word of sentences, names, proper nouns, days of the week, and months.
Punctuation
Students use periods, question marks, exclamation points, and commas appropriately in grade-level writing.

Students identify and use basic subjects, verbs, objects, and descriptive elements when constructing sentences.
Conjunctions
Students use common conjunctions such as and, but, so, and because to connect ideas.

Students write uppercase and lowercase letters and connect letters with their corresponding sounds.
Spelling Patterns
Students spell common one-syllable words using short vowels, consonants, digraphs, blends, and common spelling patterns.

Students write increasingly complex sentences and respond to questions using complete thoughts.

Students identify and correct basic spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and sentence errors.

Students introduce an opinion about a topic or text, support it with reasons or information, and provide a conclusion.
