Standards Note

Hindi in Illinois is taught as a world language and is guided by the Illinois Learning Standards for World Languages, which are proficiency-based and organised around the modes of communication — interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational — rather than by grade level.

Illinois recognises the State Seal of Biliteracy for students who demonstrate proficiency in English and another language, and allows proficiency-based world language credit for demonstrated ability regardless of where it was learned. This course supports both, but each school district administers assessment and awards credit under its own procedures. Families should confirm the process with their own school.

Hindi is not a required subject in Illinois public schools. Districts vary widely in which world languages they offer, and many do not offer Hindi at all. This course is designed to serve both heritage learners who speak Hindi at home and students learning Hindi as an additional language, which is why it includes a dedicated heritage development module alongside standard language instruction.

Illinois graduation requirements do not mandate a world language, but many colleges and universities expect two or more years of the same language for admission. Families should confirm requirements with the institutions they are considering.

The culture and festivals modules deliberately span Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, and regional traditions, because that is the reality of Hindi-speaking society. Cultural and religious content is taught academically as historical and cultural information, not devotionally. No religion is presented as true or false, and no student is asked to participate in any religious observance.

The Hindi and Indian Heritage module notes that the history and relationship of Hindi, Urdu, and the other languages of South Asia is sometimes politically contested. This course presents the mainstream linguistic account — that Hindi and Urdu share a common spoken base with different scripts and literary vocabularies — and does not advocate any political position on language policy.

The Indian History and Society module covers ancient, medieval, colonial, and modern India as historical and cultural background for language learning. It is not a comprehensive history course, and it does not take positions on contested contemporary political questions in India.

Hindi is one of many languages spoken in India, alongside Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Urdu, and many others. Studying Hindi is not a claim that it represents all of India, and the Regional Languages and Regional Diversity topics make this explicit.

Every family’s home language practice differs. Heritage learners arrive with very different strengths — often strong listening and speaking but weaker reading and writing. This course is built to meet students where they are rather than assuming a uniform starting point.

It is important to distinguish between the Illinois world language learning standards and the course structure created for this educational programme, which organises Grade 10 Hindi into a month-by-month teaching sequence.
