Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
California Grade 7 English develops students’ ability to read complex literature and informational texts, analyze themes and ideas, write clear arguments and explanations, conduct research, use language effectively, and communicate confidently. Students learn to support their ideas with textual evidence, evaluate an author’s purpose and point of view, and adapt their communication for different audiences and situations.
The syllabus is aligned with the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy for Grade 7, including Reading Literature, Reading Informational Text, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language.
Reading Literature
Textual Evidence & Inference
Students learn to identify important details and cite evidence from a literary text to support interpretations and conclusions.
Theme & Central Idea
Students analyze themes and central ideas and examine how they develop throughout a story, drama, or poem.
Characters, Setting & Plot
Students analyze how characters, settings, events, and conflicts interact and influence the development of a story.
Story Structure
Students examine how different parts of a story or drama are organized and how the structure contributes to its meaning and impact.
Point of View & Perspective
Students analyze how an author develops different points of view and how characters or narrators may have contrasting perspectives.
Figurative & Connotative Language
Students interpret figurative language, word meanings, and connotations and examine how specific language choices influence a text.
Comparing Literary Works
Students compare different literary texts, including works from different cultures, genres, or time periods, and analyze their similarities and differences.

Text Features & Graphics
Students interpret headings, charts, graphs, captions, diagrams, and other text features and explain how they contribute to understanding.
Author’s Purpose & Point of View
Students determine why an author wrote a text and analyze how the author’s perspective differs from other viewpoints.
Comparing Different Sources
Students compare information from different texts and evaluate how authors present similar topics, evidence, or claims.

Students create effective introductions and conclusions and develop ideas with relevant facts, details, examples, and evidence.
Revising, Editing & Publishing
Students revise drafts for organization, clarity, evidence, grammar, word choice, and style before producing a polished final version.

Students determine the meaning of unfamiliar words by using context, word relationships, roots, prefixes, suffixes, and reference materials.

Students strengthen grammar, punctuation, capitalization, usage, and spelling skills for effective written communication.
