Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
California Grade 6 English helps students transition to more advanced reading, writing, language, research, speaking, and critical-thinking skills. Students analyze literature and informational texts in greater depth, support ideas with textual evidence, write arguments and explanatory and narrative pieces, develop academic vocabulary, participate in discussions, conduct research, and communicate effectively across different formats. The syllabus is aligned with the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy.
Reading Literature
Theme & Central Idea
Students identify themes or central ideas in stories, poems, and dramas and explain how details throughout the text develop those ideas.
Characters & Character Development
Students analyze how characters respond to events, change throughout a story, and contribute to the development of the plot.
Plot & Story Structure
Students examine how a story or drama unfolds through a sequence of events leading toward a resolution.
Point of View
Students analyze how a narrator’s or speaker’s point of view influences the way events and characters are presented.
Figurative & Descriptive Language
Students explore figurative language, word choice, imagery, and other techniques authors use to create meaning and effect.
Comparing Literary Texts
Students compare stories, poems, dramas, and different genres that explore similar themes or topics.
Literature & Multimedia
Students compare their experience of reading a text with listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the same work.

Reading Informational Text
Textual Evidence
Students cite evidence from informational texts to support both explicit understanding and conclusions drawn from the text.
Main Ideas & Supporting Details
Students determine the central ideas of informational texts and explain how important details support those ideas.
Summarizing Informational Text
Students objectively summarize texts while identifying the most important ideas and leaving out unnecessary details.
Text Structure
Students analyze how authors organize information using structures such as comparison, cause and effect, sequence, and problem and solution.
Author’s Purpose & Point of View
Students examine why an author wrote a text and how the author’s perspective influences the presentation of information.
Arguments, Claims & Evidence
Students identify an author’s claims and evaluate whether those claims are supported by appropriate reasons and evidence.
Comparing Multiple Sources
Students compare how different authors present similar events, people, topics, or ideas.
Integrating Information from Different Formats
Students combine information from written texts, charts, diagrams, images, videos, and other media to develop a fuller understanding of a topic.

Students use common roots, prefixes, suffixes, and word relationships to understand and expand vocabulary.
Figurative & Connotative Meaning
Students analyze figurative language and distinguish between literal meanings and the positive or negative associations of words.
