California Mathematics — Grade 3
Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our California Grade 3 Mathematics course is designed around the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the 2023 California Mathematics Framework. Students develop stronger number sense, multiplication and division skills, fractions, measurement, data analysis, geometry, and mathematical problem-solving abilities.
The course emphasizes conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, procedural fluency, real-world applications, and explaining how and why solutions work. California’s Grade 3 standards place particular emphasis on multiplication and division, fractions, multi-digit arithmetic, measurement and data, and geometry.
Place Value & Multi-Digit Numbers
Numbers to 10,000
Students read, write, compare, and represent numbers using place-value understanding and different forms such as standard, expanded, and word form.
Place Value & Number Relationships
Students explore the value of digits in different places and understand how numbers are related through place value.
Rounding Numbers
Students learn to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 and use rounding to estimate and check whether answers are reasonable.
Addition & Subtraction Within 1,000
Students develop fluency with multi-digit addition and subtraction using place-value strategies, models, and standard algorithms.
Multiplying by Multiples of 10
Students use place-value reasoning to multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10, such as 20, 30, 40, and 90.
Multiplication & Division
Understanding Multiplication
Students develop multiplication concepts through equal groups, repeated addition, arrays, and real-world situations.
Multiplication Facts
Students build fluency with multiplication facts within 100 and learn strategies for solving facts they do not immediately know.
Understanding Division
Students explore division as sharing and grouping and connect division to multiplication.
Multiplication & Division Word Problems
Students solve one- and two-step problems involving equal groups, arrays, measurement quantities, multiplication, and division.
Properties of Operations
Students use the commutative, associative, and distributive properties to understand relationships between multiplication facts and solve problems efficiently.
Unknown Numbers & Equations
Students solve equations with unknown numbers and learn to determine what value makes an equation true.
Fractions & Number Lines
Understanding Fractions
Students understand fractions as equal parts of a whole and identify the numerator and denominator.
Fractions on Number Lines
Students represent fractions on number lines and understand fractions as numbers rather than only parts of shapes.
Equivalent Fractions
Students recognize simple equivalent fractions and understand how different fraction representations can describe the same quantity.
Comparing Fractions
Students compare fractions with the same numerator or denominator and use visual models and reasoning to determine which fraction is greater or smaller.
Fractions Equal to Whole Numbers
Students recognize fractions such as 2/2, 3/3, and 4/4 as equivalent to one whole and connect whole numbers with fractional representations.
Measurement, Time & Data
Measuring Length
Students measure and estimate lengths using appropriate units and solve problems involving inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.
Perimeter
Students understand perimeter as the distance around a shape and calculate or find missing side lengths in simple problems.
Area
Students understand area as the amount of surface covered by a shape and find the area of rectangles using multiplication and unit squares.
Time & Elapsed Time
Students tell time to the nearest minute and solve problems involving elapsed time and time intervals.
Liquid Volume & Mass
Students solve real-world problems involving liquid volume, mass, and measurement units.
Representing & Interpreting Data
Students read and create picture graphs, bar graphs, and scaled graphs and use the information to answer mathematical questions.
Geometry & Shapes
Understanding Shapes
Students identify and describe two-dimensional shapes using properties such as sides, angles, and vertices.
Classifying Shapes
Students classify shapes according to their attributes and understand that different shapes can belong to the same category.
Quadrilaterals
Students explore rectangles, squares, rhombuses, and other quadrilaterals and compare their defining characteristics.
Partitioning Shapes
Students divide shapes into equal parts and connect geometric partitioning with fractions.
Area & Perimeter Connections
Students explore how the same shape can have different area and perimeter values and use geometry to solve practical problems.
Mathematical Problem Solving & Reasoning
One-Step & Multi-Step Problems
Students solve problems requiring one or more operations and learn to identify important information before choosing a solution strategy.
Mathematical Models
Students use drawings, diagrams, number lines, arrays, tables, and equations to represent mathematical situations.
Estimation & Reasonableness
Students estimate quantities and answers and learn to check whether a solution makes sense in the context of a problem.
Patterns & Relationships
Students identify numerical patterns and use rules or relationships to predict missing numbers and solve problems.
Explain & Justify Solutions
Students learn to explain their mathematical thinking using words, numbers, drawings, equations, and mathematical vocabulary.
Advanced Mathematical Thinking
Mental Math Strategies
Students develop efficient mental strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Mathematical Puzzles
Students solve age-appropriate mathematical puzzles that require logical thinking, patterns, number relationships, and creative strategies.
Real-World Mathematics
Students apply mathematics to everyday situations involving shopping, time, measurement, distances, quantities, data, and planning.
Challenge Problems
Students work on non-routine problems that require them to select strategies, test ideas, and think beyond straightforward calculations.
Mathematical Communication
Students practice communicating mathematical ideas clearly and supporting their answers with evidence and reasoning.
Teaching Methodology
