Comprehensive Course Syllabus
Course Overview
Our California Grade 3 English course is designed around the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. Students develop stronger reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, grammar, speaking, listening, and research skills through literature, informational texts, discussions, and structured writing activities.
The course emphasizes understanding and analyzing texts, reading fluently, developing clear written responses, using evidence from texts, building vocabulary, communicating ideas effectively, and conducting simple research projects.
Reading Foundations & Fluency
Multisyllable Words
Students learn to decode longer words by using syllables, prefixes, suffixes, and common word patterns.
Prefixes & Suffixes
Students identify common prefixes and suffixes, understand how they change word meanings, and use them to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Word Analysis & Vocabulary
Students use word parts, context, dictionaries, and other reference materials to understand and correctly use new words.
Reading Fluency
Students practice reading grade-level texts accurately, smoothly, and with appropriate expression while maintaining understanding.
Independent Reading
Students gradually build the ability to read and comprehend increasingly challenging grade-level stories, poetry, and informational texts independently.
Reading Literature
Understanding Stories
Students ask and answer questions about stories and use specific details from the text to demonstrate their understanding.
Main Message, Lesson & Moral
Students explore fables, folktales, myths, and other stories to identify the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how the details support it.
Characters & Their Actions
Students describe characters’ traits, motivations, feelings, and actions and explain how characters influence the sequence of events.
Story Structure & Events
Students examine how events unfold in a story and understand how different parts of a narrative contribute to the overall structure.
Point of View & Narration
Students explore who is telling a story and how the narrator’s perspective influences the way events and characters are presented.
Poetry & Literary Language
Students read and respond to poetry and explore elements such as rhythm, repeated sounds, word choice, and figurative language.
Reading Informational Text
Main Idea & Key Details
Students identify the main idea of informational texts and explain how important details support the central idea.
Connections Between Ideas
Students describe relationships between events, scientific ideas, historical information, and steps in procedures using sequence and cause-and-effect language.
Text Features
Students use headings, captions, illustrations, diagrams, maps, charts, and other text features to locate and understand information.
Meaning of Words in Context
Students determine the meaning of academic and subject-specific words by using context, text features, and surrounding information.
Comparing Information
Students compare important points and key details from two texts that address similar topics.
Text Evidence & Understanding
Students refer to information from a text when answering questions, explaining ideas, and supporting their understanding.
Writing Skills
Opinion Writing
Students write opinion pieces that introduce a topic, clearly state an opinion, provide supporting reasons, and conclude effectively.
Informative & Explanatory Writing
Students write informative texts that introduce a topic, organize related information, and develop ideas using facts, definitions, and details.
Narrative Writing
Students write stories about real or imagined experiences using characters, dialogue, descriptive details, logical event sequences, and appropriate conclusions.
Paragraph Structure & Organization
Students learn to organize ideas into clear paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting information, linking words, and concluding statements.
Revising & Editing
Students improve their writing by reviewing ideas, organization, word choice, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.
Writing with Evidence
Students learn to use information from texts and sources to support explanations, opinions, and research-based writing.
